Exploring Nairobi: I Kissed a Giraffe...
From unique experiences to delightful encounters, Nairobi proved to be a city full of surprises!
In 2020, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Nairobi, Kenya, to visit my friend Getao, who I’d met in 2016 while he was on a Fulbright Scholarship in the States.
I remember the day we were sitting in my car and I told him that I would come to Kenya and looked at me and said, “Many people say this and never do it. But I have a strong feeling that you will actually come to Kenya.”
To be honest, I had no idea when or how I would get there, but since I’m a woman of my word, I figured I would find a way.
Fast forward to February 2020. Since I was already on the continent of Africa, I seized my opportunity to visit Getao in Kenya and booked a flight from Harare, Zimbabwe to Nairobi, Kenya.
From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in the vibrant culture and warm hospitality of this beautiful city. My journey was filled with unforgettable experiences that left a lasting impression on my heart.
Upon my arrival in Nairobi, I was immediately struck by the lively atmosphere and the infectious energy of the city. My first adventure began with a memorable taxi ride with a local named Michael, who greeted me with playful banter.
Despite the light-hearted teasing, I felt safe and welcomed in this new place.
During my time in Nairobi, I had the chance to explore the city on my own while James was at work. From shopping at a local mall to pampering myself at a salon, every moment was filled with new discoveries and cultural insights.
I even had the opportunity to visit Nova Pioneer, the boarding school where James teaches, and learn about the cultural significance of boarding schools in Kenya.
One of the most unforgettable highlights of my trip was visiting the Giraffe Center.
It was an absolute delight to feed giraffes up close and share in the joy of this unique experience with James and his girlfriend, Leah. The laughter and wonder we shared as we interacted with these gentle giants will stay with me forever.
After visiting the Giraffe center, we explored a few local markets and stumbled upon a percussion shop where I joined in an impromptu jam session with shop owners.
The rich musical culture of Kenya truly came alive in that moment, and I found myself captivated by the creativity and resourcefulness of local artisans.
As my trip came to an end, I attended a church service with James and enjoyed a farewell dinner featuring my new favorite Kenyan dish: lamb and ugali.
Reflecting on my journey, I am filled with gratitude for the enriching experience that deepened my appreciation for Kenyan culture.
Nairobi is more than just a city; it is a place of laughter, learning, and lasting memories.
I look forward to my next adventure in this beautiful city, eager to create even more cherished moments and connections.
My first visit to Nairobi was truly an unforgettable journey that has left an indelible mark on my heart. From the delicious food to the breathtaking landscapes, every moment was filled with warmth and beauty.
