Beyond Bucket Lists: The Significance of Making Memories Abroad
Sept. 1st means 245 days down, 121 to go. Time to make every moment count.
Am I the only one feeling like months have turned into weeks, weeks into days, days into mere minutes?
Seriously.
I woke up today and had to remind myself that today is the first day of September.
Did you know that September 1st is the:
245th day of the year? There are then 121 days left in 2024.
35th Sunday of 2024?
73rd day of Summer? There are 21 days left till Fall. My favorite season.

It kinda makes me think about how I spend my time outside of family, church and work.
While I’ve pressed pause on globe-trotting this year to focus on my new family, I have so much unpublished content to share with you.

When I started traveling abroad in 2005, I knew then the importance of making memories.
Not to just have stories to tell others, but to hold onto the experiences, emotions, and sensations that come with exploring new cultures and landscapes.
As I wandered through foreign streets, immersed myself in local customs, and shared laughter with strangers, I realized that the memories I was creating were not just fleeting moments, but a tangible connection to the people, places, and experiences.
Experiences that shaped me. Challenged me. Transformed me.
Making memories abroad allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone, challenge my assumptions, and discover new aspects of myself.
It also gave me a sense of accomplishment and pride, knowing that I had taken the time to truly experience and absorb the beauty of the world around me.
As I look back on my travels, I am reminded of the power of making memories - it's not just about collecting souvenirs or checking off destinations on a bucket list.
It’s about cultivating a deeper understanding of oneself and the world.
Join me this month as I look back on these transformative experiences, while looking forward to the adventures still to come.
This month’s Substack newsletter recommendations
In a recent newsletter from a new Substack connection,
, she wrote about how she would recommend various publications she found valuable and included Beyond Borders in her recommendation lineup! What an honor. 🥹
I became motivated to do the same and share some of the travel publications that I’ve started reading since I joined Substack 2 weeks ago.
- by Thomas Kuegler
- by Ashleigh Bugg
- by Gabrijela Corkovic
- by Alvin Toro
- by Claire Bella
- by Sara Burdick

These newsletters have quickly become a source of inspiration, knowledge, and entertainment for me, covering topics ranging from personal development to global affairs.
It's amazing how quickly a wealth of quality content can be discovered on this platform.
I look forward to continuing exploring and supporting fellow writers in the Substack travel community.
Thank you for the mention! 💖 About the change travel brings - I love this quote by Terry Pratchett (it's in my email header): "Why do you go away? So that you can come back. So that you can see the place you came from with new eyes and extra colors. And the people there see you differently, too. Coming back to where you started is not the same as never leaving."
Hi Charity! Thank you for mentioning my newsletter! 💜
